Pepper and the Snow Goose

A winter goose refuses to migrate until a cook finds the pepper blend it remembers.

Pepper and the Snow Goose
Original Short Story

A snow goose landed in the courtyard of the mountain inn and refused to leave. It slept by the woodpile, stared through the kitchen window and honked whenever the cook made bland porridge.

The cook, Tomas, tried oats, berries and polite conversation. The goose ignored him. Finally, he ground black pepper, juniper and lemon zest over roasted carrots. The goose lifted its head, marched inside and stood beside the oven as if reclaiming a throne.

Tomas realised the bird had once been fed by travellers who used that exact blend on long northern roads. He packed carrots for the goose and watched it leave with the next flock. Every winter after, he served Snow Goose Carrots at the inn, though guests were relieved to find no goose in the recipe.
