Pepper Story 34

The Peppercorn Orchestra

A conductor hears music in spice jars and composes a symphony for the pantry.

The Peppercorn Orchestra
Original Short Story

Conductor Ansel lost his hearing slowly, then all at once. The concert hall became a silent aquarium of moving bows and solemn faces. He left before anyone could pity him professionally.

At home, he began feeling sound through objects. Lentils hummed low in jars. Rice whispered. Peppercorns tapped against glass with bright irregular rhythm. He arranged them on trays, rolled them through bowls and felt their tiny percussion through his palms.

His final composition was performed with strings, drums and a table of spices amplified beneath microphones. The pepper movement made the audience sit forward, alert and smiling. Ansel could not hear the applause, but he felt it in the floorboards, sharp and lively as pepper in a hot pan.
