The Peppercorn Key

A locked pantry opens only when the right peppercorn is placed in the keyhole.

The Peppercorn Key
Original Short Story

The manor pantry had been locked for ninety years. Locksmiths failed. Historians guessed. Children dared each other to peer through the keyhole, which smelled strangely of nutmeg, dust and pepper.

Iris, the new caretaker, found an old note inside a cookbook: The key has always been grown, not forged. She tried every herb seed in the garden before pressing a single black peppercorn into the keyhole. The door clicked open with a sigh.

Inside were shelves of preserved lemons, jams, pickles and ledgers describing every feast the house had held. Iris did not keep it private. She opened the pantry to the village and made the first rule simple: anyone may enter, but everyone must bring something worth sharing, even if it is only a story and a pinch of pepper.
