The Peppercorn Circus

A miniature circus appears inside a spice jar whenever the kitchen is quiet enough.

The Peppercorn Circus
Original Short Story

Nell first saw the circus at midnight while reaching for water. Inside the pepper jar, under the moonlit glass, tiny performers were setting up a ring. Peppercorn acrobats balanced on dried stems. A coriander seed sold imaginary tickets. A chilli flake cracked a whip with theatrical seriousness.

Nell watched every night. The show changed according to the meals cooked that day. After pasta, there were tomato-red fireworks. After roast potatoes, the strongman lifted grains of salt. After soup, everyone performed in fog.

When Nell grew older, she stopped staying up late and almost forgot. Then her own daughter called from the kitchen one night, whispering, 'Mum, the pepper is doing cartwheels.' Nell smiled, fetched two spoons of ice cream, and taught her the first rule of the peppercorn circus: applaud softly, or they roll away.
