Pepper Story 18

The Night Pepper Bloomed

A family discovers their pepper plant flowers only when old stories are told aloud.

The Night Pepper Bloomed
Original Short Story

The plant on the verandah had never done much. It climbed its frame, made glossy leaves and ignored every fertiliser offered to it. Aunt Mei called it decorative stubbornness.

One humid evening, the power failed and the family sat outside telling stories because screens had gone dark. Uncle Ray told of a motorbike, a flooded road and a wedding cake rescued in a laundry basket. The pepper vine trembled. Tiny pale flowers opened like stars.

After that, flowering season became story season. No one knew whether the vine loved laughter, memory or the vibration of voices in warm air. They only knew the peppercorns were best in years when the family told the truth, embellished kindly, and stayed outside long after mosquitoes had made their case.
