Pepper and the Midnight Baker

A baker makes loaves that reveal dreams when sprinkled with pepper before dawn.

Pepper and the Midnight Baker
Original Short Story

The midnight baker worked while the town slept. His loaves came out dark, blistered and fragrant, but his favourite batch was made between three and four in the morning, when dreams were still loose in the air.

He discovered that cracked pepper sprinkled over the dough before dawn caught those dreams in the crust. One loaf tasted of ocean swimming. Another of a house with blue doors. Another made the mayor remember she had once wanted to be a drummer.

People began buying bread before sunrise, eating quietly on benches as their forgotten dreams returned warm in their hands. The baker never promised happiness. He only offered yeast, salt, pepper and the possibility that a person might remember what they had been hungry for.
